NEWTON CANDIDATE SWISTON
JOINS IN THE WALK FOR THE WORLD
On October 24, 2004, Greer Tan Swiston and her son Parker will
be walking 10K in the Newton Walk for the World. Greer first started
participating in "Walk for Hunger" when she was in elementary
school and is glad to pass the tradition on to her son. Though these
walk-a-thons have changed through the years, the feeling of community
and walking for a good cause has not.
"Besides giving support, I always try to actively participate
in several community services or charity events each year",
Swiston says. Currently a candidate for State Representative for
the 11th District of Middlesex, she's taking precious time out of
her campaign schedule just a week before the election. "I promised
myself that I would not let the campaign stop me from doing what
I cared about."
Swiston is participating in this walk for several reasons:
- She is walking because it symbolizes the walk that many do it
every day just to get a bite to eat for the week.
- She is walking to raise money to feed and serve people in need.
- She is walking because it promotes good health.
- She is walking because she supports non-profit organizations
that rally behind a cause and doesn't expect the government to
pay for everything.
- She is walking because charity is a choice, not a mandate. And
she chooses to feed the hungry.
- She is walking because it is all well and good to talk about
being charitable, but it is much better to actually do something
about it.
Greer and her son invite the whole community to join in supporting
this event, which will bring much needed funds to the Newton Food
Pantry as well as the Church World organization who have identified
Hurricane relief for Florida as one of the primary areas of focus.
